How many residents are there in each class?

Our program is approved to accept up to seven residents per year.

Where will I be training?

Training locations walkable from the University of Iowa Health Care University Campus:

  • UI Health Care Dermatology Clinic at the Pomerantz Family Pavilion 
  • UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Specialty Clinic 
  • Iowa City VA Medical Center

Off-site Training Locations:

  • UI Health Care Iowa River Landing Dermatology Clinic

What types of clinics will I rotate through?

Residents have the opportunity to rotate in a variety of specialized clinics, including cutaneous lymphoma, blistering diseases, skin of color, hair loss, and pediatric dermatology.

What is the on-call schedule?

  • First year (PGY-2): No call
  • Second year (PGY-3): 6-8 weeks of inpatient consults/weekday night call, 10-11 shifts of weekend/holiday call
  • Third year (PGY-4): 3-5 weeks of inpatient consults/weekday night call; no weekend/holiday call

How does resident education extend beyond clinic?

There are educational conferences for residents, including textbook reviews, journal club, didactic lectures, and weekly grand rounds. The curriculum is designed to cover both basic science and clinical aspects of medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, pediatric dermatology, and dermatopathology.

Will this program prepare me for the Board exam?

Over the past 10 years we have had a 100% pass rate on the American Board of Dermatology certification exam.
